Private medical colleges buy patients for Rs 500: Minister

Thursday, November 22, 2012

Bangalore: Most private medical colleges bring fake patients to hospitals and ‘admit’ them to present before the committee sent by the Medical Council of India (MCI) for annual inspection, according to the state medical education minister S A Ramadas.

S A Ramadas

“The colleges pay Rs 500 per person to act as a patient and produce them before the committee. Sometimes two to three hospitals exchange the patients just to satisfy the MCI norms,” Ramadas has said.

According to the minister, “Not just the patients, the (private medical) colleges even exchange teaching and non-teaching staff.” [Source: DNA]

There is nothing surprising in minister’s statement. What is surprising is that no action has been taken college has been against any of the private medical college managements for showing false data, not keeping records, not recruiting regular faculty, not having even qualified nurses, manipulating the data, running PG programme without regular professors and showing private medical practitioners as professors etc. In A.P, the trend of PG examinations being conducted by the private practitioners for a fee on that day in some departments has started in some private medical colleges.PG students get their thesis work corrected by the assistant professors. What will happen to the patient if he consults these specialists who did not have proper clinical training under a regular professor. Do we need this type of specialists?.Why medical education is allowed in this way?.Having come out with facts, the state health minister should tell the public about his plans to curb these types of unethical activities of these private medical college managements. The simple way is to conduct regular surprise video conferencing from Delhi so that these paper professors won’t exist and the practice of e-filling of standard inspection form by the faculty through their E-mail should be started to save paper and time. The standard inspection form should be sent to the e-mail address of the faculty. Once inspected, the medical faculty should send the confirmation through his E-mail that he is indeed a regular faculty working in that medical college whenever asked.

Minister is talking about buying the patients and recently few private medical colleges have started buying medical faculty(private practitioners) only to conduct PG examinations in departments like psychiatry,TB,Skin and radiology. So no regular professor is required for passing MD/MS. MCI should verify and take action on this.

Yes I agree with Y.Rajagopal. Every private medical practitioner having PG degree is a potential professor if he got his PG degree more than 10 years back. No need to attend the college or take any class. All requirements are taken care by the middlemen of that college.PG seats are increased by showing these private medical practitioners and fake examiners are being conducted using these fake professors. This is happening in some private medical colleges of A.P. I think our health university should verify first and then report to MCI.

After reading all discussions I felt this discussion is never ending.
To achieve the goal of satisfactory student doctor ratio, time has come to adopt public and private model.
This is better way of managing existing human resource, instead of blaming each other.
Without probing the root cause of the malady just trimming on the surface is fruitless.
Let us accept it’s universality and with a positive approach try to eliminate to the extent possible.
